In the footsteps of Łukasiewicz- Jasło
Jasło
It is a county town in south-eastern Poland, in the Podkarpackie Province, located within the Jasło – Sanok Valleys, at the junction of three rivers: Wisłoka, Ropa and Jasiołka. The city rights were granted to Jasło by Casimir the Great in 1365. The greatest citizens from Jasło include Stanisław Pigoń, Hugo Steinhaus, major Henryk Dobrzański "Hubal". There is the archaeological open-air museum "Carpathian Troy" in Trzcinica, about 12 km west of Jasło.
In the years 1857-1865, Ignacy Łukasiewicz leased a pharmacy in Jasło from the heirs of Józef Palach. The pharmacy was located at the northern frontage of the Market Square, on the ground floor of the tenement house at number 17. Today, on the facade of the building, there is a plaque commemorating the pioneer of the oil industry in Europe and the Honorary Citizen of the Town of Jasło. However, before Ignacy Łukasiewicz moved to Jasło, he had established the world's first crude oil distillery in nearby Ulaszowice. Nowadays Ulaszowice is within the town’s limits. Unfortunately, no photographs of this facility have survived to the present day. The distillery burned down in 1859. Today it houses an obelisk and a memorial plaque. In the same year, Marianna, the daughter of Ignacy and Honorata Łukasiewicz, died. The girl was buried in the Jasło necropolis. The cemetery at Zielona Street was established in the spring of 1784 and is one of the oldest municipal cemeteries in Poland.
