Staryi Sambor / Sambor
Staryi Sambor used to be called Old Town. It is a town in Ukraine near the border with Poland. These days over 34 thousand inhabitants live in Staryi Sambor.
Sambor is a town in Ukraine in the Lviv Oblast, located on the Dniester river. It is the residence of the management of the Sambor region. The town was founded by the Cracow voivode, Spytko of Melsztyn in 1390.
At the end of the 19th century, the construction of a railway line to Staryi Sambor began. In the years 1901-1905, a line of local Austro-Hungarian railways was established. The presence of railroads on the route between Stara Sil and Strzelbice enabled the development of the oil industry. The oil extracted there was pumped into a reservoir, a large red barrel, which stood in the glade of Mount Sabychów behind High Castle. Then, it was transported to the oil columns to the station in Staryi Sambor by means of gravity. At that time, the Jewish brothers Aschengrau were the owners of the oil production company. The railway was rebuilt and modernized in the 1960s and Staryi Sambor became an important railway junction.
